From the moment he landed in the care of his uncle, Carl, in 1956, it was clear that Patrick Summers was no ordinary child. Brilliant but troubled, the sullen teen repeatedly lashed out at home and at school, until uncle and nephew finally came to an agreement.
In return for Patrick’s efforts to stay out of trouble and do well in school, Carl would supply him with just about anything he wanted—from martial arts lessons, to dance classes, to sexual instruction from a prostitute.
Now, after graduating from law school at the top of his class, Patrick has big dreams for the future. He hopes to use his extraordinary intelligence to make a positive difference in the world—combating racism, religious discrimination, and other forms of social injustice.
But when a race-related protest leaves Patrick severely injured, will his dream of peace and equality for everyone, and a future with the woman he loves, meet an untimely end?

This is a thoroughly entertaining read beginning to end! The story of Patrick Summers is engaging, well developed and well paced. If it told just a good American story it clearly stands on its own. However, for this reader, the real value is the rich glimpse into a socially troubled culture, history and time that in many aspects remains today. Although the story is depicted in a recent era of American history, it clearly reflects sociopolitical elements of today's cultural strife. It further lends just enough of a sense that because of good and unselfish individual efforts humanity can still rise to noble achievement.Product details

Differential Peter D Miller 9781511928359 Books Reviews
I find myself wondering what the characters are doing when I'm not reading. That usually is a sign that I'm hooked!
This book entertained me and it made me think. It was hard to put down. Dealing with the upheaval of the turbulent sixties. Patrick develops from a sullen teenager into a positive force. The subtle way his uncle steers him in the right direction which wide latitude was amusing and insightful. The love story is appealing. The approach to sexuality suggests a practical way to reduce teen pregnancies, given the limited means of the times. A must read.
